Glucosamine is made in the body from the simple carbohydrate glucose and the amino acid glutamine. It is  found in high   concentrations in joint structures. It is also available as a supplement, in the form of glucosamine sulfate, which helps to combat both causes and symptoms of osteoarthritis. It can also slightly reduce the destruction of cartilage and depression caused by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are commonly prescribed for people with arthritis. Glucosamine may be taken in conjunction with chondroitin sulfate for an even greater effect on osteoarthritis.
